Greek mythology on the big screen

Percy Jackson and the Sea of Monsters in 3D was my mind’s perfect one hour and 46 minutes escape from reality.

The film is the sequel to the fantasy adventure, Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief, based on the novel by Rick Riordan.

In the tale, Camp Half-blood, the only safe haven where demigods are protected from evil, gets an unpleasant surprise when its magic barrier source, a large tree, gets poisoned.

Percy Jackson (Logan Lerman), son of Poseidon, does what he does best and embarks on a quest alongside his two best friends, Grover (Brandon T. Jackson) and Annabeth (Alexandra Daddario) and this time they are also accompanied by a new mystery friend.

In order to save the ailing tree, they have to attain the mythical Golden Fleece, which can only be found in the Sea of Monsters.

I thoroughly enjoyed the similar affection and humorous characteristics portrayed in the tale as were in the first movie.

The fantasy holds enough fictional elements to feed the mind; a quality I always welcome in films.

I was a bit disappointed at the amount of “monsters” there actually were in the sea and how effortless the enemy was defeated as a climax.

However, the movie was short and sweet and features an epic ending which indicates only the beginning and left me yearning for the next film.

The same, fun characters joined by some new ones can be seen and some who are resurrected prove that evil doesn’t die that easily …

I would advise reading the book before watching the film, as I did, and found the Greek mythology a lot more understandable and intriguing.

Percy Jackson and the Sea of Monsters 3D is showing at Ster Kinekor, Northmead Square. TB
