Season ends at the bottom

The Valke will have a lot to think about after the round robin stage of their Absa Currie Cup Division One campaign came to a conclusion, on Friday, September 27, with the team firmly routed to the bottom of the log.

The East Rand side met the top-of-the-table Pumas at the Barnard Stadium, in Kempton Park, in their final fixture, and the 67-17 result summed up their season.

Puma right winger Ashwin Scott dotted down four tries to help the Mpumulanga team to secure an emphatic victory, by 50 points.

The Valke were victorious in only two matches in the Currie Cup and will need to go back to the drawing board as they prepare for next year’s campaign.

The Pumas led 17-0 within the first 12 minutes, which set the tone for the rest of the game.

Two more tries, two conversions and a penalty later, from the Pumas, stretched the lead to 29 points.

Valke captain JP Mostert managed to go over the line for the Valke’s sole first-half try.

The Pumas were ruthless in the second period and ran over six tries to inflict even more damage on the home team.

The hosts scored two late tries, even after Anrich Richter was red carded, but that was not enough to prevent an 11th defeat for the Valke.
