Metro could perform a miracle
Jenny Phillips, of Crystal Park, writes: Re: Illegal refuse levy It's me again: I refer to my letter in the Benoni City Times dated 27/09/13, regarding the additional levy for "Refuse: Area Cleansing" and the article by Maile Matsimela, which was published on the same date under the heading "Metro puts brakes on illegal refuse levy".
It seems the brakes need oiling.
The levy still appears on my account.
Quick to put it on and slow to take it off.
When may we expect the levy to be removed from our accounts and to receive a refund of all the payments?
By now the interest on the approximate monthly charge to all rate payers for the levy of R3, 670, 800 must have accumulated into a very tiny sum.
Am I correct in assuming that, since it is an “illegal levy”, the funds are being held in a separate account (interest bearing of course) until such time as the internal and administrative bureaucracy has taken place to reverse the erroneous implementation of the levy and approve the refund of all payment to ratepayers?
How long will that take?
Since the festive is nearly upon us, no doubt nothing will happen until some time next year.
Perhaps, in the meantime. the interest could be utilised to start cleaning some of the illegal dumping and litter.
It should cover a portion of the cost of non-income generating services rendered by council and it might be seen as a gesture of goodwill towards ratepayers.
A Christmas miracle.
