Montreal start to 2014 for Tommy Gun
IBO super middleweight world champion Thomas “Tommy Gun” Oosthuizen will take on Elieder Alvarez, in Montreal, Canada, on January 18, for the vacant World Boxing Association’s Intercontinental light heavyweight title.
This comes after Oosthuizen’s seventh successful defence of his title against Ezequiel Maderna, at Emperors Palace, in early November, which left him at number seven on the WBA rankings.
The news means that Tommy Gun may have a shorter festive season break, as he’s currently hard at work in the gym in preparation for the showdown with Alvarez.
“I am working hard in the gym and my form is coming back,” said the 25-year-old, who lives in Lakefield.
The bout between Oosthuizen and Alvarez will mean that either fighter will forfeit their perfect record.
Oosthuizen is at 24-0, while Alvarez has not lost in 13 fights.
Should Oosthuizen win, he will be required to forfeit either his IBO super middleweight world title or the WBA Intercontinental light heavyweight championship, as fighters are not allowed to hold two titles from different weight divisions.
He will be given a period of 30 days to make his decision.
“I would just like to thank all the people from the East Rand for all the support,
“I won’t disappoint in Canada,” said Oosthuizen.
