Robbers strike at local store

A cash-in-transit guard was robbed at the Jet Mart store, in Voortrekker Street, at 5pm on April 1.

It is alleged that three suspects, armed with firearms, escaped with an undisclosed amount of cash, after pretending to be customers in the shop.

The guard from the security company had collected money from the store when the incident occurred.

“Upon leaving the cash room the guard noticed a man looking at the perfumes and then, suddenly, another man approached him from behind and pointed a firearm at him,” said Benoni police spokesperson Lieut Nomsa Sekele.

The guard was disarmed and a third robber grabbed the money box from his hand, before the robbers fled the scene through the main entrance.

Nobody was injured and no shots were fired.

No one has been arrested and the investigation is continuing.
