A Christmas production to remember

A month of preparation leading up to the fifth and final production of the year sees nine cast members embrace the real meaning of Christmas in spite of the many hardships they have faced.

A delightful, heartwarming tale of family, building relationships and the importance of treating all members of society, even the homeless, with dignity and respect forms the basis of the year-end production currently being performed by Startime Players at the Old Souls Church in Northmead.

Director Donovan Arentsen said the musical, titled The Gift of Christmas, celebrated the concepts and ideas of Christmas and making people feel grateful for what they already have in life.

Handling emotional situations, trials and tribulations of everyday life and learning to be cheerful, the play sees the characters meeting at a shelter on Christmas morning.

Intriguing mini sub plots tie up into the grander scheme of things.

“As opposed to the traditional concepts that are showcased during this time of year, the audience will be able to relate to some of the characters and their experiences and that was what we wanted to achieve.

Arentsen added that the show was being used as a fund-raiser for two organisations.

“Funds are being raised for The Thabisa Baby House in Germiston and RFKC Inc, who run camps and getaways for underprivileged children in Benoni.

“Startime Players is a community theatre group, and this is one way in which we are giving back to the community.

“The cast and those involved with the production love being on stage and they put in their time and effort, but we are also running the show for a good cause.

“Donations are collected at the end of every show.”

A single mom, a troubled teen, a runaway and an ever cheerful crowd favourite are waiting to dazzle you with their wit, humour, song and dance.

The next show dates for The Gift of Christmas are:

November 29 at 7.30pm

November 30 at 2.30pm and 7.30pm.

Ticket prices are R50 per person, refreshments will be on sale.
