Sibikwa Arts Centre hosts two-day dance festival

Artistic director of Sibikwa Arts Centre Napo Masheane welcomed guests who came from various dance institutes to watch the performances.

The French Institute of South Africa, in association with Sibikwa Arts Centre, hosted the Kabusha Tradi-Contemporary International Dance Festival on September 17 and 18.

Artistic director of Sibikwa Arts Centre Napo Masheane welcomed guests who came from various dance institutes to watch the performances.

The festival brought three performers to showcase the essence of performance and for spectators to watch the theatre come alive.

Daveyton resident Thapelo Kotlolo performed a piece titled Kuzali Upya (reincarnation).

He explained he found inspiration for the performance from exploring his identity and why we are given our specific names.

“I had changed my name twice and I wanted to engage the audience on my experiences and to also pose the question, what are the expectations behind the names we are given?

“People say we place tombstones for those who have died so they could be remembered by the future generations, but we are also named after them, so does that make us walking tombstones?”

He added he had also questioned his being and culture.

“As Christians we are forbidden from cultural practices but the man I was named after followed cultural beliefs.”

He concluded his performance by accepting the name and the calling brought upon him by the name given.

Lucky Tshimbudzi and Maphori Sebesh assisted with the music for the performance.

Two other performers graced the stage with their performances.

Mcebisi Bhayi titles his performance Lqhawe Eliqaphakathi Kum (shadow pillar), with musical support from Sibusiso Mkhize and directed by Moeketsi Kgotle.

Enda Jaime titled hers Um Segundo (the second one), with artistic direction from Ivan Barros.
