WATCH: Comrades Marathon’s first man and woman pass Tollgate Bridge

Spectators went wild as the first man crossed under the bridge just before 10:30, followed by the first woman just before 11:00.

THE atmosphere was electric as the first man passed Tollgate Bridge this morning, Sunday, June 11, during the 96th Comrades Marathon.

Defending champion Tete Dijana crossed under the bridge in a time of 04:58:28, going on to win the 2023 Comrades Marathon in a time of 05:14:01.

Spectators were just as excited when the first woman Gerda Steyn passed Tollgate Bridge with 05:28:57 on the clock. She went on to cross the finish line at Hollywoodbets Kingsmead Cricket Stadium in Durban in a time of 05:44:54.

The Comrades Marathon attracts competitors from all across South Africa and around the world. This year’s run was a Down Run, starting at the Pietermaritzburg City Hall at 05:30.

With close to 20 000 runners taking part in this year’s marathon, the Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) also revealed that 2 354 international runners from 84 countries are running this year’s race.
