Mandela Day project to bring new life to Lazarus House
Florida Road UIP is calling on the community to help transform the outdoor area at Lazarus House into a more welcoming space for abuse survivors.
THE Florida Road Urban Improvement Precinct (UIP) is inviting the community to roll up their sleeves this Mandela Day and help transform the outdoor space at Lazarus House into a safe refuge for women and children escaping abuse.
The community upliftment project will take place on Friday, July 17, and will focus on creating a greener, more welcoming environment for residents through the installation of donated potted plants and improvements to the home’s outdoor areas.
Jessie Shane, Florida Road UIP PR and marketing manager, said the initiative is inspired by the spirit of Mandela Day and aims to provide a space that offers comfort, hope and dignity to the women and children who call Lazarus House home.
While preparations for the project are well underway, Florida Road UIP is appealing to individuals, businesses and community organisations to lend their support.

Donations of potted plants, AstroTurf and gardening supplies are needed, while volunteers are also encouraged to assist with transport, lend tools or give their time on the day.
“Mandela Day reminds us that even small acts of kindness can have a meaningful impact,” said Shane.
“Through this collaborative effort, Florida Road UIP and its partners hope to create a beautiful outdoor space that brings comfort, hope and dignity to the women and children who call Lazarus House home.”
Community members who would like to support the initiative or volunteer their time can contact Jessie on 072 414 0450 for more information.
