5 Hacks to organise your home
Having a home filled with ’stuff’ can leave one feeling overwhelmed. We have pulled together the threads of some of the best home organising tips from all over the internet to help you find your way towards a more tranquil, clear and organised home life.
1. Mini storage pods
Every home needs a place near the door, sometimes referred to as a “landing strip” and sometimes better known as the “junk counter” where, as people enter the home, keys, sunglasses, phone, coins, and all assortment of other bits and bobs get dumped. While a basket is a great idea, a storage bench or small shelf can also do the trick, but these often end up being dumpsites for far more than just the contents of your pockets.
We found a tutorial online showing how to use pod like storage bubbles. They are a modern way to keep clutter to the minimum. Because they are small, nothing too large can get dumped in them, and because they are attached to the wall, they don’t take up floor space. You can make these mod, space-like, storage pods fusing a few cheap plastic cereal bowls, some nails, and spray paint to get them to either match or contrast with the colour your walls are painted.
2. Shower caddies to hang everything
Shower caddies are not just for hanging off your shower head to keep you bathroom clutter under control. They can be used behind doors and on the walls of pantries to store food, cleaning equipment, even vegetables that need to be kept in baskets.
3. Lazy Susan in the corner
The corner shelves of a pantry, cupboard, or even the back of a fridge are all far more easily used and accessed if you use a lazy Susan. Forget all the pre-conceived notions about lazy Susans only being for use on top of tables. Rotating trays can be used to hold things such as oils, vinegar and other cooking ingredients, as well as spices, vitamins or medications in cabinets or on countertops.
You can even use them in your refrigerator so nothing ever hides in the back to spoil or freeze.
A simple set up of a round plate or tray with marbles under a disk of any sort works just as well as the speciality store bought kind and can be made to fit the space you need.
4. Hanging snacks in the pantry
If you put up some rails on the ceiling of your pantry, you can save space by hanging bags of snacks and cereals from clip-on hangers rather than stack them on top of each other in shelves.
5. Clear storage tricks
Use containers to streamline the inside of cabinets and group like items together in the pantry. Clear containers or bins can be used to keep smaller items like packets of sauce mixes, gravy powders, cereal packets and sachets of warm beverages. This will prevent them being lost in a variety of boxes or scattered all over the cabinets or pantry shelves and make it easy to see when you are running out of an item.
Use clear bins to store items in very small boxes or containers such a pudding mixes, baking powder, dry yeast or gelatin.
