MORE than 1000 runners took part in the second annual Women in Sport Colour Run, with Lusanda Magadla crossing the finish line first.

The free-entry run was hosted by the eThekwini Municipality’s Department of Sports and Recreation.

Adding vibrancy and colour to the promenade on Saturday, the run started at the Bay of Plenty, heading south towards uShaka Marine World, where runners turned back towards the finish line.

Pinky Hodi, who was among the scores of runners, said it was a perfect start to her Saturday. “I normally do 10km runs but this run was a good family event which brought out a large number of people. It added colour to the morning.”

Runners were rewarded with a medal and a pink cap upon completing the race. Ward 26 councillor Sibusiso Lushaba said the race was a celebration of Women’s Month. He hailed the event as a success.

“We did not expect the numbers that we saw taking part in the event,” said Lushaba. “We were anticipating around 500 people.”

“With the success of the event we are going to go bigger next year and be better organised with eThekwini’s Sports and Recreation taking the lead.”

The event culminated with an aerobics session and a dance off hosted by well-known comedian and actor Simthande ‘MakaTha’ Myeza and Fana Ngidi.
