New dinghy for Botanic Gardens

Staff will board a dinghy to undertake the clearing of invasive plants off the lake at Durban Botanic Gardens.

STAFF at Durban Botanic Gardens are feeling a little nautical while undertaking maintenance on the lake at the Botanic Gardens.

In order to clear the invasive alien plants on the lake, the staff have had to borrow a dinghy from the Point Yacht Club. The regular dinghy which has been used by the Gardens staff for many years was discovered to be beyond repair which prompted curator at the Gardens, Martin Clement to ask the Durban Botanic Gardens Trust to assist in either repairing or replacing the dinghy.

With the assistance of honorary life president of the Point Yacht Club, Vernon Goss, The Durban Botanic Gardens Trust was able to obtain a small replacement dinghy. Vernon facilitated sponsorship by the Riverview Manor in Underberg and with the expertise of Rob Bowman of Bowmans Yacht Sales, a small craft has been beautifully refurbished and was placed on the water last week.

The new dinghy aptly named WOODII is named after the famous Cycad Encephalartos Woodii which can be found at the Durban Botanic Gardens.

The discovery was made by John Medley Wood in the Ngoye Forest in 1895. John Medley Wood was the Curator of the Durban Botanic Gardens from 1882 till 1903.
