Political intrigue meets family drama in Oranje book launch

A tale of betrayal, hidden truths and hope takes centre stage at the launch of Oranje this Saturday at the Bebrea Bowling Club.

AUTHOR John Perfect will launch his new historical thriller Oranje at the Berea Bowling Club on Saturday, May 30, at 12:00.

Set against the backdrop of apartheid-era South Africa, the novel follows Andries Steyn, a man pulled into political extremism after personal tragedy, while also confronting family secrets, loss and redemption.

Perfect said the title of the novel symbolises transformation and crossing into a new life. “To cross the Oranje was to cross over, from one life into another. That is what this book is about,” he said.

The novel also explores the consequences of violence, the weight of hidden truths and the possibility of reconciliation.

Blending political intrigue, espionage and emotional family drama, Oranje examines themes of identity, forgiveness and hope in a divided South Africa.

“I hope the metaphor speaks to you as powerfully as it spoke to me when I first saw it. And I hope, above all, that you enjoy the book,” said Perfect.

Running alongside the political storyline is an emotional family drama involving Marlene Brand, later known as Marly, who secretly raises Andries’ daughter for two decades without his knowledge.

The event is free to enter and open to the public. For more information, email John Perfect on jlaperfect1974@gmail.com.
