Calls for city health boss to be axed
The DA is calling for the city to axe health boss Nomkhosi Gxagxisa

eTHEKWINI’s head of health, Nomkhosi Gxagxisa is under the spotlight once again, with the DA formally requesting that she be suspended.
The DA announced this week that Gxagxisa has yet to settle an admission of guilt fine for R20 000 issued in January after she failed to register with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) while continuing to practise medically.
The DA said it would write to deputy city manager for health and social services Musa Gumede, calling for action against Ms Gxagxisa.
This is not the first time that Gxagxisa’s misconduct has been called in to question.
In March, the DA issued a statement calling on city manager Sibusiso Sithole to suspend her with immediate effect and institute a commission of inquiry against her after she was found guilty of misconduct by the HPCSA and questions arose over her qualifications.
Sithole failed to heed the DA’s call.
Despite admitting her guilt, the municipality has not taken any action against her. The DA has called on Gumede to differentiate himself from Sithole’s silence and suspend Gxagxisa with immediate effect.
“If the city wants its residents to have faith in its health unit then it simply cannot afford to continue with a questionable head of health who keeps bringing the municipality into disrepute,” said Zwakele Mncwango, DA caucus leader.
