A HIGH-SPEED police chase through the Durban CBD ended in a crash and the arrest of three suspects allegedly linked to a string of business robberies.

According to the Durban Metro Police Service (DMPS), the arrests were made on Saturday, September 19, during a joint operation involving DMPS Highway Patrol, Crime Intelligence and Durban Central SAPS members.

Police received information that a vehicle linked to business robberies was travelling towards the CBD. “Members spotted the vehicle and tried to stop it, but the suspects allegedly drove away at high speed,” DMPS said.

The pursuit quickly escalated, with the suspects allegedly driving through red traffic lights and dangerously putting other motorists at risk. “One suspect also allegedly pointed a firearm at police members,” DMPS said.

The chase ended near King Dinuzulu Road and South Ridge Road when the vehicle crashed into two civilian vehicles.

According to DMPS, one suspect was found hiding inside the vehicle after the crash, while two others fled on foot and were apprehended by police following a chase. Police recovered a 9mm pistol with its serial number filed off, a magazine and one live round of ammunition.

The suspects face charges including possession of an unlicensed firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, reckless and negligent driving and failing to stop when instructed by police.

DMPS said the suspects are also linked to three business robberies in Durban Central and Mayville.

“All three suspects were arrested and detained at Durban Central SAPS for further investigation,” DMPS said.
