Berea police enjoyed successful arrests for common robberies this week.

BEREA police made a number arrests for common robberies around the precinct area over the past week.
Lieutenant PN Naidoo, Communications Officer at Berea SAPS said a man, who was walking along Old Dutch Road near the Engen garage, on Sunday, 8 September when he was approached by two suspects who demanded money.
“One suspect began to wrestle with the man trying to get his cellphone out of his pocket, while the other held him down with a knife. After they took the cellphone they ran away on the pedestrian bridge. However Metro police and SAPS members were close on hand and gave chase when they realised what had happened,” Naidoo said.
The officers arrested both suspects and retrieved the cellphone and wallet containing cash which was given to the complainant. The men were charged for common robbery and assault.
Later the same day, a woman walking along Youngs Avenue was also approached by two suspects who held her up at knifepoint. “She was robbed of her Blackberry cellphone and R100 cash. She contacted the police and the Berea SAPS Crime Prevention Unit responded immediately. The woman took note of the suspects as they fled and spotted one of them in a nearby property. She pointed out the suspect to the police who made an arrest and recovered her cellphone,” explained Naidoo. His accomplice managed to get away.
A beggar on Florida Road was stabbed with a broken bottle on Monday, 9 September.
Lt Naidoo said the beggar was approached by two suspects who held him up with the neck of a broken bottle, demanding cash. “When he refused to give them any cash they stabbed him with the broken bottle in his arm. Our crime prevention members were on patrol and stopped to assist the victim. He told them what had happened and said the suspects were still running away,” said Naidoo.
Both suspects were arrested for common robbery and assault GBH.
Naidoo said the beggar had only a few rands on him.
Problem at exits routes on Berea Road.
Berea Police are warning people living in the Berea area to be vigilant when driving in and out of properties as well as the exit and entry into Berea Road. “People must be more vigilant entering the area. They must also be aware that thefts out of motor vehicles are still a problem and exposing items in vehicles are the root cause,” said Naidoo.
