The Ikusasa School of Cooking will provide life changing opportunities to ten succesful underprivileged youth who apply for their one year bursary.
THE Ikusasa School of Cooking, which provides life changing opportunities to underprivileged youth who are either resident in Children’s Homes or who come from disadvantaged families, has extended its applications for the class of 2014 till 30 September.
The school provides an intense 1 year culinary art skills programme aimed at giving students an opportunity to excel and become independent and productive young adults.
Through the Chaîne Foundation Trust, and together with The International Hotel School (IHS), St. Martin’s Diocesan Home for Children, and various sponsors, a year’s free study is provided to ten lucky candidates.
The Ikusasa School of Cooking is academically supported by IHS and students accepted into the programme work towards Skills Foundation and Proficiency Awards in Basic Food Preparation issued by City & Guilds of London. These awards have been designed to provide a broad, basic introduction to the essential practical skills required for a career in the world of Culinary Arts.
The school’s strict selection process ensures that the most deserving candidates are chosen to benefit from the programme. Michael Almendro of Ikusasa said, “It is a very good opportunity for young people that would like to get into the culinary and hospitality industry.”
Completion of these internationally recognised awards lays the foundation for the students to progress through a clearly defined qualification structure should they wish to further their studies and training.”
“To develop practical competence and gain industry experience, during the programme students are required to spend three days per week working in the kitchens of our voluntary partner 5-star Hotels: The Beverley Hills Hotel, The Elangeni Hotel and The Oyster Box Hotel and Spa,” he added. Almendro added that many students had gone on to gain permanent employment at the hotels.
