Berea police were busy on the beat making many successful arrests this week.

BEREA police had a busy week and carried out a number of successful arrests.

Remote jammer recovered

Members of the Berea Crime Prevention Unit were patrolling along Florida Road last Tuesday afternoon, 10 September, when they were alerted to car break-ins in the area.

With extra vigilant eyes they spotted a suspicious person on Florida Road. “The members stopped and searched the man and found car break-in implements, including a remote jammer and pairs of new socks in his possession which had allegedly been taken from a vehicle parked on Florida Road,” explained Berea police Communications Officer Lieutenant PN Naidoo.

The suspect was arrested for possession of car break-in implements and suspected stolen property.

Robber arrested

A man walking along Botanic Gardens Road was held up by three men, one of whom was wielding a knife, on Tuesday morning, 10 September.

Berea police’s Lt PN Naidoo said, “The suspects searched the man and took cash before running away. Police members who were patrolling the area passed the victim who flagged police down and told them what had happened and gave them a description of the men who had confronted him. The three suspects were arrested in the nearby vicinity,” he added.

The complainant positively identified the suspects and all three were arrested and charged with common robbery.

Dangerous weapon

Meanwhile, on Friday morning, 13 September, Det W/O Makoba was patrolling along Old Dutch Road. “He saw a suspicious man standing on the side of the road hiding something in his pocket. Makoba stopped and searched the man and found a knife,” added Lt Naidoo. The man was arrested and charged with possession of a dangerous weapon.

Malicious inury to property

A bus driver who transports students from Verulam to DUT was parking his bus on Ritson Road last Wednesday when two young men threw stones at the bus. The driver contacted Berea police and pointed out the youngsters when police arrived. They were both arrested for Malicious Injury to Property.

Stolen clothes recovered

On Wedneday morning, 11 September, a Musgrave resident was lucky to retrieve her clothes after they were stolen from her washing line.

Lt Naidoo of Berea police said members were patrolling when they noticed a suspicious man carrying a large amount of clothing walking along Vause Road.

They asked the man where he had got the clothes and when he couldn’t give a response, he was arrested. During enquiries, a Vause Road resdeint identified the clothes as hers and said they had been taken from her line.

Bicycle recovered

A man left his bicycle on the the verandah of his Florida Road property last Wednesday before entering his home. The bike was stolen a short while later. Lt Naidoo said a security guard patrolling in the area informed the man and they both gave chase. “The security guard arrested the suspect and the bike was handed back to the resident,” added Naidoo. Police were called in and picked up the suspect who was arrested for theft.

Drunken duo arrested for car theft

Berea police received a call early on Sunday morning about two suspicious men pushing a White Polo counter flow along Botanic Gardens Road.

“When members arrived the two young men between the ages of 25 and 30 were still pushing the vechicle. Police stopped them and when asked what they were doing, they could not respond or even confirm the vehicle belonged to them. They were charged for suspected stolen property. While they were being charged, the owner of the car arrived at the station to report his car stolen,” said Naidoo.

The arrested men were under the influence of alcohol and the charge was changed to theft of motor vehicle.

“The complainant had a CV joint problem and had parked his car on Botanic Gardens Road while he went to a garage close by to get help. When he returned he saw his car was not parked were he had left it,” said Naidoo.
