Protestors say no to sex workers in suburbs
Glenwood residents stood united on Saturday morning in a peaceful protest against prostitution.
THE Bulwer Community Safety Forum made sure its anti-prostitution message was heard loudly and clearly on Saturday as members of the community joined the civic organisation in a peaceful picket on Saturday morning.
Heather Rorick, chairperson of the Bulwer Community Safety Forum and the driving force behind the anti-prostitution campaign said the purpose of the picket was to highlight the seriousness of the problem. She said prostitution was rife in Glenwood and was seriously affecting those who worked and lived in the suburb.
“The girls used to solicit their services on Frere Road but because of turf issues, they have spread throughout the suburb of Glenwood,” she said, adding that despite it being illegal in South Africa, prostitution as a crime was not taken seriously. “These women are not getting charged. It is disheartening for the police who work so hard to bring them to book, but more often than not, they are let off with a R100 fine,” she said.
