Courts take tough stand against rape
More than 200 rapists were arrested during the 16 days of activism.
FAMILY Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Units in KwaZulu-Natal arrested 211 alleged rapists during the sixteen days of activism. The suspects were sentenced by various courts in the province resulting in 56 convictions which included nine sentences of life imprisonment.
During the period of the sixteen days of activism detectives worked hard to bring perpetrators of sex crimes to book. They arrested suspects for sexual related offences including indecent assault, child abuse and rape. In most cases the court passed appropriate sentences ensuring justice was delivered to the victims.
The Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni applauded these successes and expressed her confidence in the judicial system which had meted out fitting sentences during the sixteen days of activism. “These successes are a clear indication that the dedicated men and women in blue are committed to make this province a safer place for our women and children 365 days in the year,” she said.
