DURBAN K9 Unit members were on patrol in Morningside at 10pm on 7 January when they saw a suspicious-looking grey Toyota Yaris vehicle in the area.
According to Capt Thulani Zwane, the police officers tried to stop the vehicle but the driver sped off.
“A chase ensued and the vehicle crashed into a taxi. Six passengers from the taxi were injured and the suspect was also injured and arrested. He was taken to hospital under police guard and will appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court facing theft of motor vehicle charges once he is discharged from hospital,” he said.
The grey vehicle was circulated and it came up as a stolen motor vehicle from the Berea. The arrested suspect has been linked to 12 other theft of motor vehicles from the Berea and Umbilo areas.
According to Capt Zwane, the owner of the car had parked in Morningside at 6.30pm. The vehicle was properly locked and all windows were closed. At about 9.30pm he returned to where he had parked his vehicle and discovered it had been stolen. A case of theft of motor vehicle was opened at Berea police station for investigation.
