Firefighter Neville hangs up his helmet
Dedicated fireman, Neville Vickery, retires from the Durban Fire Department.
AFTER 40 years of fighting fires, dedicated fire fighter, Neville Vickery will sound the siren on his final day at the Durban Fire Department.
Neville joined the Durban Fire Department on 19 January 1974 and retired on 19 January 2014.
When Neville was young he always wanted to be a fireman and serve the community. His dream was realised when he began work at Durban Central Fire station in 1974.
Highlights of his career include saving people from burning buildings, helping people at car accident scenes and rescuing animals in distress.
Neville has always been passionate about his job. He returned to active duty after undergoing a triple heart bypass and shoulder operation, an indication of his dedication and commitment to the fire department.
Neville’s son, Wesley, said: “My dad has inspired both my brother and I to be who we are today. My dad is a quiet and humble gentleman, hard working and dedicated in what he does and we have both been brought up well enough by our parents. We are very proud of our father and his achievements in the Fire Department serving 40 years.”
He said they had been lucky enough to see their father step into action to help people in need, even when he had been off duty and that he was always willing to help others.
While he is sad to be leaving the department after so many years Neville is looking forward to spending time relaxing with his wife Carol, two sons, daughters-in-law and granddaughter.
