Common robbery

On 18 January at 9.30pm, Umbilo SAPS members arrested a man for common robbery.

The complainant was driving on Bulwer Road at 6.30pm when he was stopped by men driving a Runx. They shouted at him, got out their vehicle and proceeded to take rims and tyres valued at R10 000 from the man’s car.

The complainant pleaded with them to stop but they said the previous owner of the vehicle owed them a R1000. The victim called a towing company for assistance and went to lay a compalint at the charge office.

Police investigated and arrested the suspects three hours later on the same day. The suspects have appeared before the Durban Magistrate’s Court and the case has been remanded pending investigation.

Burglaries at residential premises

Umbilo SAPS arrested a man in Cedar Road on 21 January at 8am for stealing clothing from inside the property.

On arrival police were informed by witnesses that a suspect was seen breaking into the premises. As police searched the vicinity a resident, who saw the suspect hiding in her property, screamed to alert police. When police investigated the spotted the suspect trying to flee. They gave chase and caught up with in Penzance Road. He was wearing the clothes he had stolen. He was arrested.

Theft out of motor vehicle

On 21 January at 4.45am, police were patrolling along Queen Mary Avenue when they saw a suspicious black male. When police stopped to question the man, they found a navigator and a car radio with no face in his possession.

Police received information that the items had just been stolen from a vehicle. They took the suspect to where the vehicle was parked. The owner of the vehicle was woken up and informed of what had occurred. He positively identified the property and police returned the items to him. The suspect was arrested.

Firearm goes off

On Tuesday 14 January at about 7.40am, an Umbilo police officer was handing a firearm, a Z88, to another officer. The firearm went off and the bullet hit the table, but nobody was injured.

An inquiry has been opened and is currently under investigation, whereby internal disciplinary steps will be taken against the member.

This unfortunate incident occurred in the presence of community members who were present at the CSC at the time.
