Wetlands cleared of invasives

World Wetlands Day was celebrated this year by cleaning up of ponds in local parks.

WORLD Wetlands Day on 2 February saw staff from thee City’s Parks, Leisure and Cemeteries Department tackle the water lettuce in the pond at Umbilo Park on in recognition of the international commemorative day.

The day, which is celebrated annually on 2 February, saw staff embark on a variety of activities that will continue throughout the week, in an effort to emphasise the importance of conservation and rehabilitation of wetlands. This is also in line with 2014 being declared the United Nations International Year of Family Farming.

The activities started off on Monday with staff cleaning up the lake at the Botanic Gardens. The campaign was a great success and saw staff working tirelessly to remove invasive water plants from the lake. The campaign moved on to the Umbilo Park pond.

Other activities will be at Cavershem Paradise Valley, where more alien plants will be removed in order to conserve wetlands, at Danville Park in Amanzimtoti and the final day on Friday, at Umlaas River.
