New principal for Sherwood Primary

Sherwood Primary's new principal is looking forward to being part of the school family.

DEAN Unger, the newly appointed principal at Sherwood Primary School, is ecstatic to be part of the “amazing” school.

Unger was appointed principal of the school nearly a year after the death of the school’s former principal, Bronwyn Fisher who passed away after 30 years at Sherwood.

“She was special and very dedicated,” said Unger who was happy to continue with the rich legacy, structure and ethos left by Fisher.

Unger, who was born on the Berea, attended William Hartley Primary (now Hartley Road Primary), Durban High School and then Edgewood College where he followed his dream of becoming a teacher.

He started teaching at Clarence Primary and was promoted to Head of Department and deputy principal. He said he was sad to say goodbye to his former school, but looked forward to the new beginning at Sherwood.

“I have never seen such a group of dedicated staff. In a month I’ve been made to feel so at home here. The school is very environmentally aware and is the most beautiful school to drive into every day, so I am delighted to be here!”

After 22 years in the industry, Unger said teachers and principals had to do their job but also be “the parent, doctor, psychologist and make sure that the children feel loved. “We are a big hugging school. The staff really are incredible with the children. Everybody is supportive here, including our parent body,” he said.
