News from Berea SAPS

Berea police arrested three suspects for bribery and corruption after they tried to con money from a student for free campus accommodation.

Con men arrested

A student looking for residential accommodation outside the Steve Biko Campus at DUT was approached by three men who promised to secure him accommodation.

According to Berea police Communications Officer, Lieutenant PN Naidoo, the suspects promised to get the student the accommodation he needed if he paid them an amount of R1600.

The desperate student phoned his brother for assistance with the payment. He subsequently heard that the accommodation was free so reported the matter to security who contacted Berea police.

“Captain Stephen and his team responded and the three suspects were apprehended and detained at Berea SAPS for bribery and corruption.

“People are again alerted not to be scammed when looking for accommodation or registration fees at campuses. Do not pay people on the street for these services as there are cashiers in the campus to collect monies,” added Naidoo.

Weekend operation nets 24 drunk drivers

Berea police held a roadblock in the area on Sunday.

According to Lieutenant PN Naidoo, people are still driving whilst under the influence of alcohol, putting themselves at risk of being arrested.

“A roadblock was held over the weekend and 24 drunken drivers, both men and women were arrested. Please refrain from driving drunk as we have a zero toelrance on drunk drivers.”

Be aware of ATM fraud

After receiving a few cases of ATM fraud reports at the station, Lt PN Naidoo wishes to alert the public to be wary when using new technology to bank or pay for items.

“We noted that people who are using these new technology services at certain banks are being scammed and their monies are being withdrawn at another ATM whilst they are busy trying to do a transaction at one ATM. They are aware of the other transaction when they receive an sms on their cellphone alerting them to it.”

Naidoo said people need to verify the safety measures when using the new technology banking applications with banks or advised them to use the old system of banking if they are unfamiliar with online or cellphone banking safety.
