DA to probe councillor’s election night crash

The DA will investigate one of its ward councillors after he was allegedly driving drunk and crashed his car last Wednesday night, after election day.

A local councillor who was arrested on the night of the general elections for allegedly driving while under the influence of alcohol will know his fate within his party once he appears in court in November this year.

The local councillor allegedly crashed his luxury car into another car, injuring two women in Musgrave Road shortly after voting was closed for the general elections on Wednesday.

The councillor who was allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol would not comment to Berea Mail and referred us to the DA’s provincial chairman Haniff Hoosen.

Sizwe Mchunu, the DA’s provincial leader said the party was made aware of the incident. “It was brought to our attention and the councillor concerned will have to wait until such time he appears and pleads in court.”

Mchunu told Berea Mail that the DA cannot act on the incident until the councillor has appeared in court.

“We have an internal disciplinary process in place, and the councillor is well aware of the internal disciplinary process that will unfold.”

Police spokesman Captain Thulani Zwane confirmed that a case of drunken driving was opened at the Berea SAPS for investigation. “It is alleged that about 10.45pm along Musgrave Road, a 41-year-old suspect allegedly lost control of his vehicle and collided with another vehicle. He was then arrested after he was found to be under the influence of liquor. He will appear in the Durban Magistrates’ Court on 5 November,” added Zwane.
