Armed robber wounded in Manor Gardens shootout

A member of a gang was arrested following a shooting in Manor Gardens on Monday.

AN armed robber was arrested following a shoot out in Manor Gardens on Monday.

Blue Security operations director Henk van Bemmelen said a Blue Security reaction officer was responding to an alarm in Elland Road in Manor Gardens when a resident in the area pointed out a gang of five armed robbers leaving a property. A silver Toyota Corolla getaway car was parked nearby.

“As our reaction officer approached the gang the driver of the Corolla tried to run him over while the other gang members fired several shots at him. The driver pointed his gun at our reaction officer who, in turn, fired and shot the driver of the Corolla before taking cover behind a vehicle,” van Bemmelen said.

He said the injured driver fled the scene in the Corolla. He lost control of the vehicle and crashed into another car near Entabeni Hospital.

“The other gang members hijacked our reaction officer’s vehicle and fled. We later tracked our vehicle to Chesterville where the robbers had abandoned it. The SAPS K9 unit arrived at the scene to search for the rest of the gang, he said.

The injured gang member was taken under police guard to a nearby hospital.

“We believe that he is a wanted suspect who may be linked to a string of armed robberies in Durban,” Van Bemmelen said.
