Cordon and search safeguards pupils

Cellphones, which are not allowed in school were found during a cordon and search operation by Berea police at Sastri College on Monday.

BEREA police held a successful cordon and search operation at Sastri College on Monday morning.

According to Lieutenant PN Naidoo, the operation was part of a SAPS child protection week initiative, which aimed to make children more aware about drug abuse and bullying.

“The school identified 27 classes we should search and this was done with positive results. No pupils were found with drugs and they were very co operative while the members explained the purpose for the search. Only cellphones, which were not allowed in school were found and handed to teachers,” said Naidoo.

The school’s principal, Rajan Maharaj said he was happy to have the police on board as part of the school’s safety and security strategy. “This is a relationship with police that exists and one that we will build on. We will have more of these operations,” he said.

Naidoo added this type of awarenesses at schools would be carried out monthly.
