THERE were Long John Silvers and Captain Hooks aplenty at Clarence Primary School in Greyville recently when students from Embury Institute for Teacher Education held a pirate fun day with the school’s Grade 3s.
The third year foundation phase students were challenged to organise and host the fun day as part of their assessment mark for the physical education module.
“How amazing to see this day unfold in total success, not one hiccup – totally 100 per cent smooth running!” said Sharon Sweet, a third year student from Embury.
The students raised funds, searched for sponsors and worked out activities – taking names from the Disney programme Jake and the Neverland Pirates.
Hours were spent planning games and activities, eats and drinks, goodie bags, medals and exciting prizes. To match the pirate-themed music and sing-a-long, songs were carefully selected for the play list. The more mundane but important tasks like first aid and suitable and safe equipment were also part of the organisational tasks.
The day started enthusiastically as the excited and happy learners sang their team war cries with gusto. The children participated in activities like walk the plank, DJ decks and peg leg. At the break the children enjoyed cool drinks and hot dogs.
The Clarence Primary School Fun Day would not have been possible without the sponsors, The Butcher Boys, Wakaberry, Bhikas Transport, Camchad Engineering, PO’s Construction, BSA Bearing Services (SKF), Standard Bank, BC Industrial and Go-sure Insurance Brokers. Their generous sponsorship of cash and prizes ensured that every child was treated to a fun event that they will remember for a long time.
