On the move

David Captain thanks the community for helping to fix his electric wheelchair.

UMBILO resident, David Captain, is grateful to those who responded to a recent appeal in Berea Mail to help fix his electric wheelchair.

David said the Friday after the article was published, John Waterhouse called him and sponsored four new wheels and two arm rests for his wheelchair.

Ben and Naomi Stapersma contacted him and kindly donated two batteries for the chair.

“I'm on the move and I have my independence. I feel very happy and grateful. I can do my patrols again and look forward to being able to attend Umbilo CPF meetings. I even went as far as Davenport Centre on the weekend to do my shopping!” he said.

David said he was grateful to Barry Eddy for fitting the batteries and thanked everyone who responded to the article to help in any way.

David was assaulted in 1995 and his neck was broken, leaving him a quadriplegic and wheelchair bound. He lives off a R1300 per month disability grant and is unemployed. He is on the executive committee of the Umbilo CPF and is an active member of the community. He is also a member of the QuadPara Association and takes part in their Arrive Alive campaigns during the holiday season.
