Beloved Glenwood High School teacher retires after 22 years

Ron Pet retires after 42 years in education, leaving a lasting legacy at Glenwood High School as a teacher, mentor, and sailing coach.

AT a warm and intimate gathering recently, Reuben Rossouw (Head of Cambridge) paid tribute to a man whose impact goes far beyond the classroom. Ron Pet retires as an educator at Glenwood High School, having served at the school for 22 years.

“Twenty-two years is not just a number, it is a legacy. Pet has shaped countless young minds with energy, passion, and an unmistakable drive that could never be contained behind a desk.”

Known as the heart of sailing at GHS, Pet did not just coach a sport; he created a sense of belonging. For many boys searching for direction, he provided purpose, guidance, and the wind in their sails.

“Versatility defined his career. Since joining in 2004, Pet has taught an extraordinary range of subjects, including Afrikaans, IT, CAT, Physical Sciences, Natural Sciences, Creative Arts, Life Orientation, and Physical Education, a true testament to his adaptability and commitment to education.

“Beyond the classroom, he set the gold standard as a Grade Controller, leading with integrity, consistency, and care. As a colleague, he was dependable, generous, and always ready to lend a hand, often going above and beyond,” the school shared.

Under his belt, Pet boasts 42 years in education with only nine days of absence, “an achievement that speaks volumes about his dedication”.
As Pet sets sail into retirement in Cape Town, his legacy and inspiration will live on in every student and colleague whose lives he has touched.
