City agrees to light up Lacey Road

After a three year battle for implementation, electricity will be provided to residents of Lacey Road Informal Settlement.

MORE than 170 residents at the Lacey Road informal settlement in Sydenham will be supplied with electricity.

This was revealed at a recent meeting of eThekwini council when approval for R887 178 for the construction of the medium and low voltage reticulation of the informal settlement was given. The project will provide a supply of electricity to around 174 residents.

Ward councillor, Jethro Lefevre, said: “The electrification of Lacey Road forms part of the policy adopted by council but has been a three year battle for me to have implemented. I am very grateful that these resident now have access to the basic service of electricity and that criminals who have used the informal settlement to hide in because of the lack of lighting, now have nowhere to hide. Giving these people access to electricity gives them dignity.”

Lefevre said he was also busy working towards having a new ablution facility built for the residents so that they would have access to basic sanitation.
