Durban hosts world youth Chess Champs

More than a thousand of the world's greatest young chess champs are in Durban for the World Youth Chess Championships at the ICC.

TALENTED young chess players from around the globe have converged in Durban to go head to head in the World Youth Chess Championship at Durban's ICC this week.

The championship is the largest international chess tournament to ever be held in Africa. The WYCC opened at the ICC on Saturday afternoon with the first round of games following an hour later.

“This competition is one of the most prestigious tournaments in the international chess calendar with approximately 1200 participants from over 90 countries,” chief organiser, Logan Reddy said.

The tournament will run until Monday, 29 September culminating in the prize giving ceremony on the final day of the tournament.
