Litter a major eyesore at stadium
A Durban resident said Metro Police need to start enforcing by-laws.
LITTERBUGS are causing a major headache for Durban residents who are fed up with the rubbish left strewn around.
Vaughn Willians contacted the Berea Mail this week after seeing the shocking amount of litter left lying around outside the Bike and Bean at Moses Mabhida Stadium after the weekend.
“Every Sunday people drink alcohol and litter illegally in this area. We have been given this beachfront but why do people make it so filthy! Every time I walk on the beach and run on the promenade, there is broken glass, old meat and rubbish lying around. It seems Metro Police are not enforcing the by-laws,” he said.
Ward councillor, Martin Meyer, said the issue of litter was a multi-faceted problem. “First of all it is the responsibility of people not to litter. Policing is not that easy, as there are only so many law enforcement officers available. People should be taking responsibility to leave our natural resources the way they found it,” he said, adding that it was also a matter of law enforcement.
“Drinking in public is against the law, but this law goes largely unenforced. I will engage with Metro Police on this matter. A lot of the litter we see are empty beer bottles, and therefore I believe enforcing the public drinking law will have a positive impact on the littering problem too,” he said.
