Young photographers awarded

Maris Stella and Glenwood High pupils won prizes for their photography at the Schools' Photographic Competition.

WINNERS of the Schools’ Photographic Competition were announced on 22 September and highlighted amazing talent and creative flair among high school photographers in the province.

The judges, from the Matthew Willman Visual Arts Foundation, were delighted at the high standard submitted by photographers from local schools Maris Stella and Glenwood High School, as well as Hillcrest High, Pinetown Boys’ High, Kearsney, Westville Boys’ and Girls’ High Schools, Danville, St Johns DSG, Wykeham Collegiate, Carter High and a home-schooled learner.

Nearly 300 entries were received in five categories, Black and White Portrait, A Happy Moment, The Beach, Mandela’s Vision of South Africa and Sport. The competition forms part of Culture@Kearsney, a platform to showcase the talent and creativity which exists among the province’s youth.

Maris Stella pupil, Lerusha Naidoo came second in A Happy Moment with her photo Green grass with friends and Kyla Theron, also from Maris Stella, won in the Mandela's Vision of South Africa category with her first placed photo, A helping hand.

Glenwood High's pupil Graham Hunt was second in the sport category, with his photo, Turquoise Fun.

Winners in each category received a cash prize of R2000, second place R1000 and third R500. The photos were on display at Kearsney College.
