Siblings represent KZN

Karl and Caity Steen will represent KZN in surfing and rhythmic gymnastics respectively.

SIBLINGS, Karl and Caity Steen, are passionate about their sport of choice.

Karl,(13), a pupil at DPHS, has been surfing for four years. He started surfing after a family friend and top surfer, Jason Ribbink, was teaching his son how to surf and decided to take Karl along as well. It wasn't long before the bug bit and Karl developed a passion for the sport which sees him chasing the waves as often as possible after school and in the early mornings in summer.

Karl is currently sponsored by Hurley and has twice won the KZN regional champs in the U13 boys' category. He will be in Jeffrey's Bay to represent KZN at the SA Champs from 8 to 12 October.

Karl's other interests include rugby and waterpolo. He plays for the first team in water polo and will join his team on tour to Cape Town when he gets back from Jeffreys Bay.

He has been at DPHS since Grade R and will start his high school career at Clifton next year.

Older sister, Caity,(14), is a pupil at Maris Stella School and has been doing rhythmic gymnastics for six years. She is now competing in her level 7 in the U15 years category. She came 1st in the KZN regionals in her age group and is going to represent KZN at the SA champs in Cape Town from 8 to 12 October. This will be the fourth time she has represented her province at the championships.

Caity started rythmic gymnastics when she was in Grade 3 after being invited to a gym class at the school. She fell in love with the sport and has pursued it ever since.. She has competed in Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg at various national competitions.

Her other interests, which she participates in socially, include hockey, waterpolo and soccer. Her hobbies include baking. She has been at Maris Stella School since Grade R.
