Late night jazz sounds not welcome
Residents were subjected to loud music until 1am recently, when a jazz event ran over time.

A jazz party which ran over its advertised time has earned the ire of residents who live near Sutton Park where the concert was held.
According to one resident, placards placed around the city showed the Jazz Expressions event was to run all day, from 11am to 11pm.
“Much to my dismay, the sound of the extremely loud music only came to an end at 1am on the Sunday morning, two hours after the advertised finishing time. Sutton Park is not the ideal venue for a jazz concert as it is surrounded by many blocks of flats and houses, and as such, many households would have been adversely affected in one way or another by this ghastly noise in the early hours of the morning,” he said.
The complainant said he had personally phoned Metro Police three times, and was sure he was not the only one to do so.
“A permit would have had to be obtained from the municipality to hold this event and I would appreciate it if the ward councillor would investigate this matter. The municipality should reprimand the organisers and come down heavily on them. One would think the municipality would have advised Metro Police who should have ensured the closing time was adhered to. We in Morningside are subjected to more and more of this which is most unpleasant,” he said.
Ward councillor, Martin Meyer, said he was aware that the concert went over time.
“I had correspondence with the organisers, who are eThekwini officials, beforehand and they promised that the event would end at 11pm. I am very disappointed that they did not adhere to their promise and have already been in touch with them to express my displeasure. I welcome events in Sutton Park, as we need to reclaim our public open spaces from decay and vagrancy, as events like this draw people back into our parks, but then the people living there must be respected and the concert must end as advertised.”
He said he had interacted with residents beforehand who were not opposed to the event, and even had some positive feedback regarding the music.
” It is all about respecting each other, but going on until 1am on a Sunday is extremely disrespectful,” he said.
