OPEN Air School held its speech and awards ceremony on Thursday.
Guest of honour at the ceremony was paralympian and national record holding field athlete, Tyrone Pillay, who pledged his support for Jumping Kids at the 2013 StepUp500 Challenge. He was recently selected as the KZN Sport Personality of the Year as well as KZN disabled Sportsman of the Year.
The Open Air School Dux for 2014 was Aminah Pharos and the Cedric Hilson Honour Prize was awarded to Minenhle Zulu.
This prize was founded by Mr Herbert Bishop, assisted by other friends of Mr and Mrs Hilson, in memory of their son, who was a learner at the school from 1940 until his death at the age of 13 in 1945. Although debarred by delicate health from the usual childhood activities, Cedric, with great determination and fortitude, led a full and useful life. It is awarded to a learner who displays the qualities which resemble Cedric himself.
The Neil de Villiers Trophy, donated by Mr and Mrs Chamier in memory of Neil de Villiers, for the most Outstanding Sportsman of the Year went to Smisokuhle Mntungwa, who displayed good sportsmanship in judo while representing KZN in the SA Games. He is the SA Champ in both KZN goalball and KZN judo.
The Wareing Trophy, for the most Outstanding Sportswoman of the Year, was awarded to Bonisiwe Ngubane, who has excelled at table tennis this year. She made the SA basketball team for women’s U25 and the KZN table tennis team.
The Sweidan Trophy for the Disabled Sportsman of the Year went to Ranetsi Manyoni, who has excelled in handcycling. He also competed in the Amashova Classic, finishing 106km in 6,5 hours.
The Paraplegic Trophy donated by the late Professor Wallace for good sportsmanship and progress in paraplegic sport went to Musawenkosi Dlamini and the Erika van Niekerk Trophy for the Disabled Sportswoman of the Year, was awarded to Zenande Mabanti, Duduzile Mceleni and Bonisiwe Ngubane, who have made it to the SA basketball U25 ladies team.
The Roberta McLean Award for an outstanding quality was awarded to Maryam Oberay for involvement in both academic and social aspects of school.
The Shelley Altshuler Memorial Prize is awarded to a learner or a public individual who has promoted contact between learners and learners from other schools or the public. This year it was awarded to Unathi Mtolo.
The Monty Goldstein Memorial Prize, presented by Edwin Swales VC Shellhole for unfailing good manners and courtesy, was awarded to Nathan Saville.
