Durban ready for Meyiwa send off

Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates Captain Senzo “Nzuri” Meyiwa's funeral will be held at the Moses Mabhida Stadium tomorrow. There is a memorial service for the much loved soccer star at Durban City Hall today.

PPREPARATIONS for the funeral service of the late Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates Captain Senzo “Nzuri” Meyiwa are well underway and the City is ready to host thousands of soccer fans from all over the country.

The service is being co-ordinated by the KZN Government, eThekwini Municipality, Orlando Pirates, South African Football Association, Premier Soccer League and the Meyiwa family.

The funeral service will take place on Saturday at 10am at the Moses Mabhida Stadium and has been declared a provincial official Funeral.

eThekwini Mayor, James Nxumalo assured stakeholders and the public that all logistics are in place and the stadium has been prepared, to give the Umlazi soccer star a well-deserved send-off.

“We have hosted major events at the stadium but this is the first time that a funeral will be held at the Moses Mabhida Stadium. We are going to put a light-weight perforated ground cover that will protect the grass from being damaged. Meyiwa last played at Moses Mabhida Stadium in September during the MTN 8 Final and that was a few days before his birthday. It is very sad that the stadium, where he made acrobatic saves a month ago, will be hosting his farewell,” said Nxumalo.

The memorial service takes place today, 31 October, at the Durban City Hall starting at 12h00.

To cater for the large crowds expected to attend, a marquee has been set up on Church Walk outside the City Hall. For parking, the public can park vehicles at the Centrum site opposite the Workshop Shopping Centre and walk across to the City Hall.

Trains have been made available to ferry people to and from the stadium for the funeral service. The trains are free and they will start running between 08h15 and 21h00.
