Pupils open hearts to orphaned animals
Livingstone Primary School gave a donation of cash and pet food to PACT.
LIVINGSTONE Primary School made a donation of funds and pet food to Phoenix Animal Care and Treatment (PACT) at a special assembly on Friday.
Livingstone children opened their hearts to orphaned and abandoned newborn kittens at the school. Caryl Marshall, a teacher at the school is also a foster mother to newborn or very young kittens which she receives from PACT, a registered rescue organisation.
The ‘nursery’ is in the media centre, and the babies are bottle-fed, loved and nurtured by the children and staff. These little kittens or puppies have the privilege of being a very important and loved part of the school.
“This is very therapeutic for the children. What is just wonderful is that all the babies get adopted by the children or teachers at the school. About 25 kittens and five puppies found their forever homes with children at the school this year,” said Caryl.
Livingstone Primary decided to do a collection for World Animal Day and because of the relationship between Caryl and PACT, the school decided it would honour them for the amazing work they do.
A total of R2912,80 was collected and lots of dog and cat food for the homeless and hungry animals was also donated to PACT.
Neeri Naidoo from PACT said she was impressed by the efforts of the children and said around 50 lives would be saved through this donation.
“You children are heroes! We feed around 100 animals a day, and each child in assembly has fed an animal through this donation,” she said.
