Dedicated teachers help Anneen through matric finals

A matric pupil is grateful to Brettonwood High School teachers who gave up their time to tutor her in her matric year.

THE combined efforts of a group of dedicated teachers who tutored matriculant, Anneen Aberdeen for her final matric exams, were largely responsible for the good marks she received.

Anneen, who has learning problems, had her appendix removed in March last year and as a result, missed a month of school.

“She needed extra help as she didn't know where to turn. Before break-up day last June, I called around to schools at random to see who could help her, and hoped for the best! I got hold of Mrs Ryan from Fairvale School, who said she would help Anneen to complete her life sciences syllabus and do revision with her. Mrs Naidoo from Merebank also said she would do extra lessons with Anneen, and she provided her with past exam papers to do revision, as well as her own revision notes,” said her mom, Loueen.

Loueen then contacted Brettonwood High School, where she was thrilled by the help Anneen received by dedicated teachers at the school.

“Brettonwood were amazing! I was introduced to Mrs Mdleleni, a maths teacher, who just put her arms around me and said that even though I had to wear sunglasses in the classroom to be able to see, I was there to work, and nothing else mattered. She even bought me a special pen to write my matric with!” said Anneen.

Mrs Mdleleni met with Anneen from March to do maths lessons twice a week after school, and more frequently as finals approached. Anneen passed her matric maths papers through the help and dedication she received from her.

Mr Dlamini from Brettonwood assisted Anneen with accounting, and included her in his October school holiday revision programme, giving up his own time, even though Anneen was not a pupil at the school.

“Mr Dlamini was amazing and so dedicated. He has his own methods which paid dividends. I went from getting 40 per cent to 60 per cent with his help. I was also introduced to Mr Mensah, who gave me life sciences lessons, straight out of invigilating for exams. Mr Dlamini introduced me to Mr Taku who took me for business studies lessons, and thanks to him, I went from getting 40 per cent to 70 per cent in my finals!”

“We are very grateful to these teachers. I am so pleased my daughter had the privilege to be helped by dedicated people who sacrificed their time to help others. It proves that a child with learning problems can still achieve! A special thank you also goes to Carmen Boshoff for being a reader for Anneen during trials and finals. We are also grateful to the Department of Education, which was fantastic!” said Loueen.

Anneen is looking forward to the future, and will be studying financial management at Centec in Peter Mokaba (Ridge) Road, this year.
