Take care of your skin

Netcare 911 urges the public to be sun-smart and to take precautions to prevent skin cancer.

NETCARE 911 urges residents to take care of their skin this summer.

People with a high risk of skin cancer are those with fair skin, freckles and red hair, and people with family history of skin cancer.

“Take care: some medication increases your sensitivity to the sun, causing you to burn faster,” said Chris Botha.

To prevent skin cancer stay out of the direct sun between 10am and 4pm, wear clothes that cover your skin and a wide brim hat if you have to spend time in the direct sun.

“Use a broad spectrum sunscreen that protects you against UVA and UVB rays when spending time in the sun. Remember to re-apply regularly. Do not use tanning beds if you are in the high risk category.

“Remember, it is important to go to your doctor immediately if you find a suspicious-looking mole. Early detection of skin cancer is easily treated,” he said.
