Petition – no bail for Kurtlee murder suspects

Friends of brutally murdered student, Kurtlee Pillay, have taken to social media online petitions in the hopes of having bail denied to the three men accused of his murder.

FRIENDS of Kurtlee Pillay, the student who was brutally murdered last November, have taken to social media to garner support to petition the chief prosecutor, Sagren Naidoo, to deny bail to the three accused of the student's murder.

The online community petition, 'No Bail for Kurtlee's Callous Killers' –

https://secure.avaaz.org/en/petition/Mr_TC_Mabaso_Chief_Magistrate_Durban_KZN_South_Africa_Deny_bail_for_murder_suspects/?swgIXib was started on Wednesday, a day before the second appearance of two of the accused, Blaine Raman and Dinesh Nana's bail application.

The petition outlines how the community is struggling to come to terms with the brutal and premeditated murder of Kurtlee Pillay, described as 'one of our humble, simple and respectful children'. The petition asks that Durban's chief prosecutor hears the community's plea to deny bail to all three suspects unconditionally.

“The degree of torture and brutality meted out to Kurtlee before his death can be described as nothing short of savage, callous and inhuman. The absence of remorse, truthfulness and compassion, after the heinous crime was committed by them on the night of the 4 November 2014, has left our community horrified and shocked. A cruel fate was suffered by a young man trying to secure the safety of his friends by rushing out to help them with a staged breakdown. The nature and circumstances of the offences have induced a sense of outrage in the community,” the petition said.

Meanwhile, in the Durban Regional Court on Thursday, magistrate Vanitha Armu heard investigating officer, Detective Warrant Officer Krishna (Monty) Naidoo, testify and substantiate why the three men should be denied bail.

Sensitive to the feelings of close family members of Kurtlee Pillay, Naidoo requested that they leave the court while he read details of the postmortem report. With tears running down her cheeks, Tracy Pillay was led out with her mother and husband Benjamin before Armu heard that Kurtlee was stabbed more than 35 times on his upper and lower body, as well as sustaining severed fingers while being dragged under his car before he succumbed to his injuries.

Blaine Raman (20), Dinesh Raman (21) and Bilal Tayob (26) are charged with premeditated murder, conspiracy to commit murder, hijacking and robbery with aggravating circumstances.
