Help furnish new TAFTA rooms

TAFTA is appealing to the community to help it furnish newly-renovated rooms for residents of John Conradie House.

THE Association for the Aged (TAFTA) is appealing to the community to help furnish the newly-renovated rooms at John Conradie House.

According to CEO, Margie Smith, thanks to the amazing support from the caring public, 136 rooms at the old age home in Prince Street, Durban, have been completely renovated and freshly painted, and the elderly residents who were forced to move out during the building operations were excited to return 'home'.

“Before they do, we want to furnish the rooms with all the things that turn a house into a home. And we can't do that without help again.

“Residents at John Conradie House have no income other than their old age grant of R1 350 per month. Imagine having to survive on so little! They have to 'make do' in every other aspect of their lives. That's why, with your help, I really want to provide a comfortable and homely environment in which they can spend their golden years,” she said.

New beds and a comfortable armchair, plenty of cupboards to store precious possessions, having a bedside pedestal on which to stand a loved one's photograph – these are the things that turn a house into a real home, and are needed for the new rooms.

“Just because you're getting on in years doesn't mean that these things aren't important any more. In fact, as you get older and less active, home comforts mean the world. But, like everything else, they cost money. New mattresses and base sets are expensive. We would really appreciate it if people could help buy these, or help towards them for our residents,” said Smith.

If you can help, contact TAFTA on 031 332 3721 or visit www.tafta.org.za.
