Crash sparks fresh appeal for speed calming

A Morningside resident has once again asked for speed calming in Trematon Drive following an accident on 5 March.

A RESIDENT in Morningside has appealed to the authorities to enforce speed calming in Trematon Drive, following a horror accident at the intersection of this and Burman Drive last week.

A young student was killed on impact after colliding with a tree at the intersection on the night of 5 March.

Tony Chaperon, who approached the Berea Mail last year regarding his concerns for motorists at the intersection, said he had since been in contact with ward councillor, Martin Meyer to see if something could be done to curb speeding along this stretch of road.

“We really need a traffic circle at this intersection. There is such a volume of traffic on this road and residents from Kensington, Morton Hall, Lady Anne Lodge, Morningside Ridge and others can only access their homes from Trematon Drive.

“There is also a school and old age home on the same road. We sit and watch the speedway and every day we hear blowing of horns and the screeching of brakes, then we wait for the accident!

“As the council had no problem demolishing roads, traffic circles and pavements to accommodate Top Gear, surely they can do this simple job before another life is taken,” he said.

He said Eugene Naidoo of the Roads Department had been notified by City Watch of his request at least a year ago.

“He replied that this request would be investigated as one of the many similar requests the department receives daily and he could not confirm when the assessment and evaluation process would be completed,” said Chaperon.

Ward councillor, Martin Meyer, said: “I am deeply saddened by this accident, and I have been warning the city of this since 2011, as has Avrille Coen and Prof George Devenish before me.

“This is exactly why the community and myself have been asking for urgent measures to be taken to safeguard our residents. I have again, after this incident, engaged with the various departments, and will continue to ask for measures to be taken.”
