Call to secure Acton Road sub-station

Mark Kritzinger feels the municipality needs to do something to maintain and secure a sub-station in Acton Road.

UMBILO resident, Mark Kritzinger, is calling on authorities to secure the Acton Road sub-station as a matter of urgency.

According Kritzinger, whose property is adjacent to the sub-station grounds, the state of the property has been an ongoing issue for many years, and has been featured in Berea Mail before.

“The property is so overgrown and is a safety concern. We have had six burglaries over the past year, and another resident has also been broken into, as criminals get through the property and climb over my wall. Criminals can easily duck down in the grass and stay out of sight. The municipality would fine me if my property looked like this, but they can get away with it,” he said.

Kritzinger said the gate and fence also needed attention, as he has had to secure the gate with his own lock.

“If the gate wasn’t secured, it and the fence would fall over! The posts are rotten. I feel the fence is also not adequate to keep thieves out. They have cut through the fence in the past, which I have tied up again myself. Thieves break into the sub-station and steal the cables and have even stolen the main cable in the past. I have spoken to municipal workers who have come to the sub-station, but nothing gets done,” he said.

eThekwini Head of Communications, Tozi Mthethwa, said: “The complaint has been forwarded to the relevant units within eThekwini Municipality who will attend to the matter. The electricity gate posts will be upgraded and overgrown grass on this plot will be cut soon. “
