WHILE reports of more xenophobic attacks have been circulating on social media, police have confirmed that there are no incidents of violence in Durban’s central business district however, a strong police presence remains.
Captain Kephu Ndlovu, spokesman for Durban Central police confirmed that the Durban central area was calm after Tuesday’s xenophobic attacks.
This comes after messages hyping a tense situation in the city was circulated on social media yesterday. The reports allege a massive riot in the city with three people murdered in Russel Street, “The Point area is expected to flare up with violence when load shedding starts and SANDF is going to the Point area tonight. “Hey please nobody, I mean nobody come into central Durban town people going mad shooting. People stealing stuff. Just don’t come into the CBD area. Stay safe.”
Another message read: “Durban town is hostile two Malawians got chopped head in half on Commercial Road, Petrol bombs, people scattering everywhere. Do not go to town, please warn friends and family, town is a no go area.”
“There was no shooting, nobody was beheaded and the army is not coming out,” Ndlovu said. He added that there was no “no go” area in the city yesterday.
This is false information as there are a lot of members deployed in the Central Business District monitoring the situation and there has been no incidents reported,”he added.
