CALM has been restored to the streets of Durban and other hotspots of xenophobic violence throughout KwaZulu-Natal according to SAPS.
This follows a peace imbizo at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Monday where Zulu King, Goodwill Zwelithini shared the stage with political leaders to denounce the attacks on foreign nationals and called for peace and calm in the province.
The proactive deployments by Lt Gen Mmamonnye Ngobeni, the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, at the Moses Mabida Stadium as well as the Durban city centre and other affected areas paid off as no incidents of violence or unrest were reported.
General Ngobeni commended the members of the SAPS and the other security forces for working together and successfully bringing about peace and order in the affected communities.
The number of arrests still remain at 114 and the number of deaths at six. SAPS saids proactive police deployments are set to continue until the authorities are satisfied that there is no possibility of a resurgence of attacks on foreigners.
“Joint committees of representatives from government and the security sector at provincial and national level will continue to engage in dialogue to adapt and implement strategies to sustain the peace and calm presently being experienced and to forge a way forward for the peaceful co-existence of local South Africans and foreign nationals,” said Major Thulani Zwane.
