BEREA police are encouraging the community to contact them if anyone has had copper or brass address number signage stolen from their homes. This comes after a man was arrested with a bag full of copper and brass address numbers last Friday.
According to Lieutenant PN Naidoo, communications officer at Berea SAPS, Sergeants Ricky Pillay and Carl Dennis were patrolling along Musgrave Road when they noticed a suspicious man walking along the road.
“They stopped and searched the suspect and found a screw driver and pliers in his pocket. They noticed the plastic packet he was carrying and found brass numbers inside,” he said.
Naidoo said the man was allegedly stealing the brass numbers people use to number their homes. He was charged for being in possession of suspected stolen property. Naidoo said anyone who had their numbers stolen should contact the investigating officer or exhibition clerk on 031 312 2345 to view the stolen property.
According to a police source, brass and copper numbers are sold at R50 a kg to scrap dealers.
